Week 10 (24th-28th November)

Monday 24th November

Sourced some Blender tutorials for me to try (watched on 2x speed so I've actually vetted how useful they will be to me). A mix of basic blender controls/interface and some beginner isometric room models (since I want to use it for drawovers in future for environments).

Been updating content for assessment video because I know from previous years it takes a while. No new work to show Sean tomorrow unfortunately

Tuesday 25th November

Considering whether it's worth cutting H3LPR entirely? I don't want to cos it's my favourite character and cuts some more of the emotional narrative, but theoretically the Inventor could see his house machine arms working in living room and get idea that way and then find the evolved Machine himself? Where does the remorse come in? I like the dynamic. Alternatively, could H3LPR be deliberately upgraded to H3LPR-2.0 to become the Machine?

Meeting with Sean. Said I'm making good progress, in first semester it's ok to have mostly research over finalised visuals. I still feel very far behind but he said I'm fine. Would be more concerned if I only had visuals with no ideas. Wants me to be able to get a full film done ideally instead of the trailer, is there a way to cut down the size and scale of the story? Discussed photogrammetry again, I could potentially use it to comp VFX in tricky scenes (eg if I can't animate all of the evolved machine by the end). It would be good for me to mention all my considerations and solutions for filming problems; eg 2D background matte paintings or photogrammetry set scanes for greenscreens, or just moving eyebrows and mouths with expressive body language instead of many printed replacable face plates

Wednesday 26th November

Spent a lot of time in the 3D lab working on my Tails model. However I did accidentally delete all my history from that session and lost an hour and a half of work that I had to redo…I'm happy with how it's going though, he's looking good and I didn't even get stuck!

Thursday 27th November

Spent six hours in the 3D lab. I managed to get my Tails model (more or less) complete! There’s still parts that are a little lumpy and hands still need a bit of work, but I can fix them later and in the retopology. Retopology will be fun… (I don’t mind the uv unwrapping). Am I…enjoying 3D?

Friday 28th November

Had a bit of an artistic breakthrough. Was really struggling to focus and was being crippled by perfectionism and the need to make every sketch portfolio-worthy with a mechanical pencil. My study assistant (who is also an artist) suggested I try a medium I don’t normally use, like a chunky marker. I used a coloured brush pen and a liner pen on top to bring out the details and y’know what? I actually REALLY like how sketchy this is! It’s so much quicker to just get ideas down and I love how messy it is, it doesn’t HAVE to be good at this stage. If I want to clean up more for portfolio I can trace them digitally. I’m also starting to solidify more of a design for the Inventor but I still need to do some variations for experimentation sake. It’s very loose, I'm aware it's not the world's best sketches and that's ok, because it gets the idea across. One of my goals is to now try and get over perfectionism and fear and just get ideas down on a page no matter how "bad" they turn out
